Dorothy Jeanne Thompson, a female American jazz harpist, composer and fantastic singer. She used to be one of the greats, playing together with names such as Woody Herman and Louis Armstrong, she won the Down Beat magazine’s critics’ and readers’ awards for best jazz performers, and creator of many famous theatrical musicals of that time… nowadays her name is almost unheard of, however. Whenever people talk of Soul or Vocal Jazz, I’ve never heard her name pop up, which is sad, since she has a powerful voice. As the cover indicates, this album has something special – a japanese stringed musical instrument named “koto”, which is plucked using the thumb, index and middle finger. She perfectly incorporates this instrument into her Jazz music, in order to make it sound rather oriental, especially with its eastern-sounding arrangements.
